The Congress on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling his remark on Jawaharlal Nehru in the Lok Sabha "absurd and nonsense".

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh in a post on X said that PM Modi's remarks were "vicious", adding that he "suffers from deep insecurities and complexes".

"The Prime Minister was at his nonsensical worst in the Lok Sabha yesterday and undoubtedly will stage a repeat performance in the Rajya Sabha today. He suffers from deep insecurities and complexes which makes him attack Nehru not politically, but personally in a vicious manner," Jairam Ramesh said.

He said that former PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee and former Deputy PM Lal Kishan Advani never did this. “But Mr. Modi, being who he is, thinks he is being clever but actually demeans the office he holds. Megalomania and Nehruphobia are a toxic mix that is leading to the Murder Of Democracy in India," the Congress leader said.

Prime Minister Modi had taken a swipe at former PM Jawaharlal Nehru in the Lok Sabha on Monday, saying that Nehru considered Indians lazy and less intelligent than their American and Chinese counterparts.

“Let me read what Prime Minister Nehru had said from the Red Fort. 'Indians generally do not have the habit of working very hard, we do not work as much as the people of Europe or Japan or China or Russia or America'. It means that Nehru ji thought that Indians were lazy and less intelligent,” PM Modi said.

In his reply to the 'Motion of Thanks' on the President's address, PM Modi also attacked former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He said that Indira Gandhi's thinking was no different from Nehru's.

PM Modi also said that Congress’s mindset is such that it never trusted the capability of the country. “It considered itself rulers and the public as someone lesser, someone smaller,” PM Modi said.
