PM Modi will play Putin if he wins again, this is last chance: Congress chief

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday alleged that India will slip into dictatorship if the BJP wins again in this year's Lok Sabha polls and the country will not have elections after 2024. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would abolish elections to remain in power, similar to what Russian President Vladimir Putin did in his country.

"This will be the last opportunity for the people to save democracy in India. If Narendra Modi wins another election, there will be a dictatorship in the country. The BJP will rule India like Putin in Russia," Kharge said while addressing a party rally in Odisha's Bhubaneswar.

"After this time, there will be no election," he said.

He alleged that the BJP was threatening people to leave the party and alliances if they opposed the ideologies of the BJP and the RSS. He questioned that if such tactics continued, it would harm the democratic and constitutional structure of the country.

"Notices are being served to the leaders and the ED and Income Tax have become weapons to grind the political opponents," he claimed, adding that the people should be aware of the BJP and RSS ideologies.

He made these remarks after the Bihar Chief Minister severed ties with the Mahagathbandhan, whose constituents are the RJD and the Congress in Bihar to join the BJP-led NDA.

Kharge claimed Nitish Kumar's decision to join NDA will not have any impact on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

"One person quitting Mahagathbandhan will not weaken us. We will defeat the BJP," the Congress chief said.

Responding to PM Modi’s jibe at Congress’s achievements during its rule, Kharge said, "You (Modi) became the Chief Minister of Gujarat and now the Prime Minister because the Congress had held democracy and the Constitution high. But you are now destroying the basics of democracy and the Constitution."
