Mohan Charan Majhi was on Tuesday picked by the party leadership to become the BJP's first Chief Minister in Odisha. A firebrand tribal leader, Majhi is known for his performance in the Odisha Assembly.

Majhi, who has held the Keonjhar Assembly seat since 2019, won it in the 2024 Assembly election by a margin of 11,000 votes.

Reacting to the BJP vivtory in Odisha, Majhi thanked Lord Jagannath and the 4.5 corer Odias.

"I thank Lord Jagannath, the reigning deity of Odisha. It is due to the blessings of Lord Jagannath, that the BJP has achieved a majority in Odisha and is going to form the government in the State," said Majhi after his name was announced.

"I would like to thank the 4.5 crore Odias who decided to vote for a change and bring the BJP to power in Odisha. The BJP will definitely honour the trust that the people of Odisha have shown," added Mohan Majhi.

Mohan Charan Majhi, started his career as a guruji at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, a school run by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

The 52-year-old leader started his political journey by becoming a village council chief (sarpanch).

"Mohan Charan Majhi is a strong and firebrand tribal leader from mineral-rich Kendujhar district, says senior journalist and political analyst Jatindra Dash.

Dash says that Majhi is from a humble background. "Mohan Majhi is also known for his performance in the Odisha Assembly," he adds.

Mohan Majhi, who is a non-controversial figure, is considered to be a loyal BJP member and a strong organisational leader. Majhi, with a strong RSS link, has extensively worked in the BJP's Odisha state unit.

Majhi has also been the Chief Whip of the BJP Legislative Party and has played a crucial role in the party's election strategy.

Majhi's political career spans over two decades. His ability to connect with the masses, particularly in the tribal regions, has earned him popularity. As a four-time MLA, he has a deep understanding of the state's governance system and has been instrumental in shaping the BJP's policies for the region.

Majhi will have big shoes to fill as he becomes the chief minister after Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik, who occupied the position for a record 24 years.

In 2023, Mohan Charan Majhi was suspended from the Assembly for throwing non-boiled-whole dal at the Speaker's podium. Majhi and his MLA colleague Mukesh Mahaling refuted that they had thrown dal, but had only presented it to the Speaker.

The unique protest by Majhi and Mahaling was reportedly to highlight the alleged Rs 700-crore scam in the purchase of pulses for the mid-day-meal scheme.
