DMDK leader meets poll body officials, seeks recounting in Virudhunagar seat

Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam's (DMDK) Lok Sabha candidate from Virudhunagar, Vijaya Prabhakaran, on Wednesday approached the Election Commission (EC) seeking re-counting of votes in the constituency.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, Prabhakaran, son of late Captain Vijayakanth, was defeated by Congress's Manickam Tagore by a margin of just 4,379 votes. Even on the counting day, the two candidates saw a see-saw battle at the counting venue.

In his complaint letter to the poll body, Prabhakaran alleged that several irregularities and malpractices occurred on the counting day to make the Opposition INDIA bloc candidate win.

"There was an intentional failure and accomplice of the election machinery in the Virudhunagar Parliamentary constituency to make the returned candidate, belonging to the ruling DMK alliance victorious by any hook or crook," the letter submitted by Prabhakaran to the poll body read.

He had also filed a similar complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, Prabhakaran's mother and DMDK general secretary, K Premalatha, also alleged that her son was defeated by a conspiracy and demanded recounting of votes under the supervision of a retired judge.

She further claimed that there were irregularities from the 13th round of counting and that even when the counting was still underway in Virudhunagar, DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had declared the INDIA bloc's victory on all 40 seats of the state

Speaking to reporters outside the poll body's Delhi office after submitting his representation, Vijaya Prabhakaran said that he was assured of a response by the EC officials.

He further added that if he doesn’t get a favourable decision within a week, then he would approach the court regarding this matter.
