Vehicles were torched in Shibpur as well during a Ram Navami procession.

By Suryagni Roy, Rittick Mondal: Defying police orders, BJP Bengal president Sukanta Majumder reached Howrah’s Shibpur on Sunday to meet local residents at Panchsheel apartment, where vandalism was reported during a Ram Navami procession. Majumder, however, was stopped from visiting the site.

Clashes erupted in West Bengal’s Howrah between two groups during a Ram Navami procession on Thursday.

“If the police stop us, will set what can be done. We have no faith in the investigation by CID. We want central agencies to investigate. Everyone knows illegal activities happen at the house from where stones were pelted. Did CID visit that house?” said the Bengal BJP chief.

Talking to India Today, Howrah CP, Prabin Tripathi, said that the situation is normal in Howrah, however, Section 144 remains in place and the police have requested people to avoid unnecessary gatherings.

The situation is not normal yet. I will report the ground reality to the Governor. A lot of people I have spoken to have told me that they are scared. Central govt and State govt should talk about the deployment of CAPFs here. There should be a CBI inquiry into the incident: Westâ€æ pic.twitter.com/fkjYyCIm6n — ANI (@ANI) April 2, 2023

Reacting to Sukanta Majumder's visit to Howrah, Tripathi said, “We would request public representatives also not to violate section 144. We will take action according to the situation. As section 144 is imposed, we will not allow any outsiders here.”

WHAT HAPPENED IN BENGAL ON RAM NAVAMI

Ram Navami celebrations on Thursday were marked by violence across several states. In West Bengal, clashes erupted in two areas -- Howrah and Dalkhola -- during Ram Navami celebrations.

In Howrah's Kazipara, several vehicles were torched and shops ransacked.

Police said a group of people attacked a Ram Navami procession and started throwing glass bottles, stones and bricks at those who had participated in it.

Vehicles were torched in Shibpur as well during a Ram Navami procession.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned of action against those who are “into riots and conspiracy” after the violence in Howrah.

In Dalkhola, a person was killed, while several others, including five to six police officers, were injured following clashes between two groups during a procession.

On Friday, fresh clashes were reported from Howrah with reports of stone pelting.
