9 killed as SUV collides with bus in Gujarat

Nine people were killed and 31 injured when an SUV jumped over a road divider and crashed into a private passenger bus on NH-48 near Parthan village in Gujarat’s Navsari district early Saturday.
One bus passenger and eight of the SUV’s nine occupants died on the spot. One person in the SUV who survived and 30 injured bus passengers were admitted to different hospitals at Navsari, Valsad and Surat.

took place around 3.30 am when the SUV, a Toyota Fortuner, carrying employees of

Prolife Chemopharma

, an Ankleshwar-based chemical unit, was returning from Daman. The employees had gone for a trip to Daman in the vehicle provided by the company.
“The SUV driver lost control and the vehicle jumped to the opposite side, breaking the road divider. It collided head-on with the bus coming from the opposite direction and headed to Valsad,” said a Navsari police officer.

The bus passengers were from Kolak village and were returning home after visiting Pramukh Swami Shatabdi Mahotsav in Ahmedabad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and announced a relief of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a

road accident

in Navsari. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover soon,” he tweeted.
Union home minister Amit Shah also expressed grief over the “heartbreaking” accident. “My condolences to those who have lost their families in this tragedy. May God give them the strength to bear the pain. The local administration is giving immediate treatment to the injured, praying for their speedy recovery,” he said in a tweet.
Chief minister Bhupendra Patel also expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
