A 22-year-old Dalit man was allegedly killed last week in Karnataka’s Yadgiri district. The incident occurred after the man, identified as Rakesh, got into an argument with the accused Fayaz's sister over chapati (roti).

The police filed a case against two accused, Fayaz and Asif.

According to Yadgir Superintendent of Police Sangeeta, Rakesh had gone to the shop run by Fayaz’s sister to buy roti.

Upon his arrival, she informed Rakesh that all the chapatis were sold out. However, Rakesh persisted in his demand, causing a disturbance at the house.

The woman was alone at home when the incident occurred and decided to call her brother, Fayaz, for assistance.

Fayaz arrived at the scene and confronted Rakesh. An argument ensued between the two, and the confrontation escalated into a physical scuffle, resulting in Rakesh's death.

Following the incident, the family of the victim initially hesitated to register a formal complaint with the police. They were considering a financial settlement with the perpetrators. However, SP Sangeeta persuaded the family to file an official complaint.

The Yadgir Police have initiated an investigation into the case and are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of Rakesh's death.

The FIR has been filed under Sections 109 (punishment of abetment), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
